A vivid exploration of Sydney's gay history, from underground subculture to a vibrant community.

Garry Wotherspoon's Gay Sydney: A History traces the evolution of gay life in Sydney across a century, from its hidden, underground existence to the vibrant and diverse community of today. Updated from his 1991 classic, this edition examines the shifts that have occurred, including marriage equality and anti-discrimination legislation. Wotherspoon also reflects on the disappearance of a distinct gay sensibility and the transformation of gay bars into cafes and gyms.

Explore the secret gay life, the debates about sex in society, and the social movements that shaped LGBTQ+ rights. Discover the personal stories and political battles that have defined Sydney's gay community. This insightful history is for anyone seeking to understand the cultural evolution of one of the world's most iconic cities.
