In school a straight guy Tommy and others like him are ridiculed by teachers and fellow students for behaving toward their male friends in the same ways that female students commonly behave with their female friends. They are told that they must behave in a more masculine fashion if they want to avoid punishment. With help from their parents and some supportive administrators, they push back against the discrimination as much as they can. Tired of the discrimination, a gay guy Derek decides to have a sex change operation so that he can behave in the ways that feel natural without being pressured to be more masculine. The procedure is a success and Derek becomes Clara. He and Mike split up, but later get back together and even wed, once it becomes clear that Mike is in love with the person that Derek/Clara is and not his/her gender. This story tells all the cultural things that discriminate against straight men and gay men everywhere they go but especially on the job.
