Born in rural Georgia in 1935, Jody Dixon personified the traditional values of the Old South--"but always, just beneath the surface, an internal voice insisted, "What's wrong with me?"

Born in remote rural Georgia in 1930, Jody Dixon grew up on his daddy s farm, his playmates the descendants of former slaves. The traditional values of the Old South lived on: devotion to family, to the land, and to hard work. The son of a domineering, distant father and an equally powerful mother, Jody toed the old line school and church, eventual marriage and children, and great success at work in his business. But always, just beneath the surface, a small internal voice insisted, What s wrong with me? For Jody knew what no one else knew: from the time he was a youngster, he had always been more attracted to men than to women. Decades of faithful family life were followed by many years of therapy and courageous self-exploration. Finally, at age seventy, Jody Dixon risked alienating loved ones and community to celebrate the rebirth of his true sexual self, daring, at last, to fully embrace the fact that he was a man who loved men.
