A virus has decimated humanity. Terrifying creatures have appeared, standing in the fields like scarecrows during the day, hunting their prey at night. Icarus and Charlton survive on their sugar cane farm in Far North Queensland with their dog, Fiddich, keeping the farm going in the hope that life may return to normal one day. Rus sees the world in colours and meaning, while Charlie is driven by pragmatism.

Tension is building between the two, heightened by the arrival of Adam - a charming and manipulative ex-solider who hides dark secrets. As the crows surround the farmhouse and neighbours and friends begin to disappear, the land becomes bleak, and hope starts to fade.

The farmhouse is a fortress of sorts, but Rus and Charlie need more from the world, and time and the elements are against them.

A.D. Lyall writes speculative fiction. He loves fantasy for the complex worlds it contains, science fiction for glimpses into possible futures, and horror for how it can reveal the human condition within terrible circumstances. He also enjoys the interplay between characters and the natural and created worlds. Colour, sound and elements of nature all feature prominently in his writing. A graduate of RMIT University's Professional Writing and Editing course, A.D. Lyall has worked as a copy and manuscript editor and has significant experience as an executive within the not-for-profit sector. The Last to Go, was shortlisted for an Aurealis award in 2024, under the Best Science Fiction Novella category. He lives in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia.
