After the onset of a neurological condition, Nate Cannon got back in touch with the body that betrayed him--and the boy he knew he was supposed to be when he was a child. Facing multiple setbacks that amplified his mental illness, Nate came close to dying by suicide. Only after losing nearly everything was he able to get the green light to proceed with his gender transition. Embracing his gender identity led him to form a new life and rebuild relationships, including with his mother. His story is by turns harrowing, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

Nate Cannon holds an MFA in creative writing from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. His first memoir, "Running on a Mind Rewired," was written under his former name, Jennifer, and has been used in chemical dependency and mental health curricula in high schools, colleges, treatment centers, and hospitals around the country. His essay "The Invisible Man" appears in the anthology "Queer Voices: Prose, Poetry, and Pride" (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2019).
